One of the leading art fairs in Africa, Investec Cape Town Art Fair returns to the Mother City from February 14–16. In addition to the main section, there will be curated sections showcasing emerging and mid-career artists, leading print galleries, and design projects by Southern Guild, Cape Town’s preeminent design gallery. If you go, stay at the intimate Ellerman House, which has a world-class art collection, or the Silo, which boasts a stunning design by Thomas Heatherwick and is located directly above Zeitz MOCAA, Africa’s newest art museum.
Fans of Scandinavian design should prepare to brave the cold and fly to Sweden for the annual Stockholm Design Week. Together with the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair, it put Sweden on the map when it launched in 2002, and has become one of the most important design events in Europe. This year, highlights include the Young Swedish Design exhibition, Misschiefs (self-described as “a groundbreaking feminist nomadic exhibition of contemporary collectible design”), and the new Swedish Design Museum to Go, which will open the homes of prominent Swedes to visitors. Stay at the Nobis Hotel Stockholm, a member of Design Hotels in two historic buildings.
